How to Specify Filter Discs for Your Application
- Mesh count / micron rating: Match the aperture or micron rating to the smallest particle you must retain or pass. The table below lists mesh count, aperture and micron for each option — for woven cloth, specify the aperture or micron, not just the mesh count.
- Micron & construction: Set the micron/beta rating and construction (single layer, multi-layer pack, pleated or sintered) for the flow and dirt load.
- Material / alloy: Select the alloy for the environment — 304 for general use, 316L for chlorides, food and chemicals, brass or copper for shielding, and Monel, Inconel or Hastelloy for marine, acid and high-temperature service.
- Environment: For damp, coastal, chemical or high-temperature service move up to 316L or a nickel alloy; for dry indoor duty 304 or a coated steel is usually enough.
- Standard: This product is supplied to ISO 9044 base cloth. Quoting the standard on your order guarantees interchangeable dimensions and filtration data between suppliers.
Handling & Installation Practice
- Install with the coarse guard/support layer upstream and the fine filtration layer downstream — check the flow arrow on the element.
- Seat the gasket, DOE or bayonet end squarely so unfiltered fluid cannot bypass the element.
- Where the duty allows, backflush or ultrasonically clean rather than replacing — woven and sintered media are reusable.
Common Selection Mistakes with Filter Discs
- Rating an element by nominal micron only and ignoring the beta ratio, so real efficiency is far lower than expected.
- Fitting an element the wrong way round, so the fine layer sees the full dirt load and blinds immediately.
- Choosing a disposable cartridge for a duty where a cleanable sintered or wire-cloth element would pay back quickly.
Where Filter Discs Is Not the Right Choice
Not for coarse bulk screening (an oversized straining basket or perforated sheet is cheaper) and not where the duty exceeds the element's temperature, pressure or chemical rating.
