316L Stainless Steel Filter Discs

Material page for filter discs in 316L Stainless Steel. The default filtration and process-industry grade. Covers the grade designation (AISI 316L (1.4404)), corrosion and magnetic behavior, cleaning and compatibility notes, and the specifications available.

Why Choose 316L Stainless Steel for Filter Discs

The default filtration and process-industry grade. For filter discs, this matters when superior resistance, including chlorides, brines, food CIP and mild acids is the controlling requirement.

Corrosion Behavior in Filtration Service

316/316L adds 2–3% molybdenum to the 304 composition, which sharply improves resistance to chloride pitting and mild acids. For filter discs in marine, brine, food-CIP and chemical-process service, 316L is the default filtration grade; the L (low-carbon) variant also resists sensitization where elements are welded into frames.

Cleaning & Compatibility

Stainless filter discs can be cleaned by backflush, ultrasonic bath, steam and most CIP chemistry. Two cautions: (1) avoid extended contact with hydrochloric acid or hypochlorite sanitizers, which pit even 316; (2) where the mesh contacts carbon steel during fabrication or service, iron pick-up can rust-stain the surface — specify passivation after fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can 316L Stainless Steel filter discs be welded into frames?

Yes — spot, TIG and plasma welding are standard for framing and edging. Use matching filler, keep heat input low to protect the fine wires, and re-passivate stainless after fabrication.

Is 316L Stainless Steel filter discs magnetic?

316L Stainless Steel filter discs is essentially non-magnetic. Note that heavy cold-working during weaving can make austenitic stainless slightly magnetic at the wire surface.

What corrosion resistance does 316L Stainless Steel offer?

316L Stainless Steel provides superior resistance, including chlorides, brines, food CIP and mild acids, with a practical service range of approx. +550 °C continuous.

What temperature can 316L Stainless Steel filter discs run at?

The practical continuous service limit is approx. +550 °C continuous. Above it, oxidation scales the wire surface and the aperture drifts; for hotter duty move up the alloy ladder (Inconel, and sintered constructions for mechanical stability).
