316L Stainless Steel Precious Metal Catalyst Trap Filter

A stainless steel sintered catalyst trap filter housing opened to show a cylindrical grey sintered element

Precious Metal Catalyst Trap Filter in 316L Stainless Steel (AISI 316L (1.4404)) is used for catching palladium, platinum and rhodium catalyst fines after hydrogenation and coupling reactions so the precious metal is recovered instead of lost to the product or waste stream. The alloy gives superior resistance, including chlorides, brines, food CIP and mild acids and is essentially non-magnetic, with a practical service limit of approx. +550 °C continuous.

Where 316L Stainless Steel Precious Metal Catalyst Trap Filter Is Used

  • Pharmaceutical API plants: Pd/C and Pt/C recovery after hydrogenation steps.
  • Fine & specialty chemicals: homogeneous and supported Rh and Pt catalyst traps.
  • Refinery & petrochemical pilots: catalyst fines guard filters ahead of downstream units.
  • Precious-metal refiners: recovery filtration of spent-catalyst slurries.

Ordering Precious Metal Catalyst Trap Filter in 316L Stainless Steel

  • Micron rating: 1–5 µm sintered media retains typical Pd/C fines.
  • Pressure & temperature: Match the reactor discharge conditions and the back-flush pressure.
  • Construction: All-welded SS316L with ASME BPE finishes where GMP cleaning is required.

Mistakes to Avoid with Precious Metal Catalyst Trap Filter

  • Allowing the cake to dry on the element, creating a fire risk at opening.
  • Undersizing filter area so the trap blinds within a single batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What micron rating catches Pd/C catalyst?

Typically 1–5 µm sintered media.

Can catalyst trap filters be reused?

Yes — the sintered element is back-flushed, cleaned and integrity-tested between campaigns.
