Material page for sintered fiber felt in Monel 400. The marine and chemical-processing specialist alloy. Covers the grade designation (UNS N04400 (2.4360)), corrosion and magnetic behavior, cleaning and compatibility notes, and the specifications available.
Why Choose Monel 400 for Sintered Fiber Felt
The marine and chemical-processing specialist alloy. For sintered fiber felt, this matters when excellent resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid and alkalis is the controlling requirement.
Alloy Properties
| Grade designation | UNS N04400 (2.4360) |
|---|---|
| Magnetic response | Slightly magnetic |
| Service temperature | approx. +540 °C |
| Corrosion characteristic | Excellent resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid and alkalis |
Cleaning & Compatibility
Special alloys tolerate aggressive cleaning chemistry, but confirm the specific acid/alkali against the alloy datasheet — e.g. Monel handles HF but not oxidizing nitric; titanium handles nitric but not HF. When welding elements into frames, use matching filler and inert-gas backing to preserve corrosion resistance at the joint.
Comparable Alloys
Between the special alloys, selection is chemistry-led: Monel 400 (HF, seawater), Inconel 600 (heat/oxidation), Hastelloy C-276 (broadest acid resistance), nickel 200 (caustic), titanium (chlorides, weight). 316L remains the cost benchmark — specify a special alloy only when the datasheet chemistry demands it.
