Temporary Cone & Basket Strainers manufactured to ASME B16.5 fit follows the specification table reproduced on this page. The standard fixes geometry and tolerances; alloy chemistry and testing are assigned by their own companion documents.
ASME B16.5 fit — Scope
ASME B16.5 fit specifies the designation system, dimensions and tolerances of temporary cone & basket strainers — mesh count or nominal opening, wire diameter and the permissible aperture deviations. Alloy chemistry, mechanical testing and delivery condition are governed by separate documents in the same standards family.
Tolerance Classes
ASME B16.5 fit defines tolerance limits on the average aperture and on the maximum single aperture, tightening as the aperture gets finer. For test-sieve duty the tighter ISO 3310-1 tolerances apply instead of the general cloth tolerances — specify sieve grade explicitly if the mesh will be used for particle-size analysis.
Specifications Defined by ASME B16.5 fit
| Nominal pipe size | Screen mesh | Open area ratio | Style | Reference standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DN25 (1 in) | 20-Mesh to 100-Mesh | >150% | Cone / basket / truncated | ASME B16.5 flange fit |
| DN50 (2 in) | 20-Mesh to 100-Mesh | >150% | Cone / basket / truncated | ASME B16.5 flange fit |
| DN80 (3 in) | 20-Mesh to 100-Mesh | >150% | Cone / basket / truncated | ASME B16.5 flange fit |
| DN100 (4 in) | 20-Mesh to 100-Mesh | >200% | Cone / basket / truncated | ASME B16.5 flange fit |
| DN150 (6 in) | 20-Mesh to 100-Mesh | >200% | Cone / basket / truncated | ASME B16.5 flange fit |
| DN200 (8 in) | 10-Mesh to 60-Mesh | >200% | Cone / basket | ASME B16.5 flange fit |
Equivalent Standards
Where direct equivalents exist (ISO ↔ ASTM ↔ DIN), they are listed on the parent Temporary Cone & Basket Strainers page. Confirm against the specification table on this page — nominally equivalent documents can differ in tolerance limits.
When to Specify ASME B16.5 fit
ASME B16.5 fit is the US-market reference; for metric programs pair it with the ISO designation so both markets read the order identically.
